This thesis started as an attempt to sort out the bundle of information that has been accumulating in my mind, with an aim to comprehend the time I live in and draw connections between relating subjects of my practice. The content derives from the very fact that I exist right here and now, aware of being too dependent on technological devices which are putting into question the principles of being human. Developments in computation, machine vision and deep learning have set up new ways of communication, acquiring knowledge, behaviour, and understanding the world. I found myself in the discourse of speculative futures where, regardless of all the technological developments we find ourselves entangled in, there is a lack of understanding of our own creations. The impossibility of staying focused, and the constant urge to jump from one fact to another, didn’t allow this text to have a classical, linear storyline. Instead, the thesis takes the form of a rhizome, a collection of interconnected texts that expand upon each other by drawing further connections to other related subjects.
The emergence of devices that offer us knowledge on demand has changed the culture of acquiring and sharing information, turning dictionaries and encyclopaedias into almost obsolete containers of knowledge. As an ode to the physical engagement with books, this thesis takes the form of a pocket guidebook in which texts are sorted alphabetically according to their subjects. The act of reading requires starting with the subject REALITY (p. 28). From there on, the reader may continue to navigate the rest of the book by choosing one of the suggested options at the end of each text.
