series of photographs, glass sculptures, soundscape; site-specific installation for Trixie The Hague, January 2019,
Glass Cycle started as a dialogue with a photographer and performance artist Emma Sarpaniemi. It was conducted in a form of a photographic and performative exploration of glass, versatile material which enabled us to find a balance between our fundamentally different nature of practices.
Through the series of reactions on each other’s actions, we dissected the medium of glass and interpreted its material, ontological, functional and symbolic characteristics. Emma Sarpaniemi, by the means of performance, explored the symbolic idea of glass as a surface, as well as its potential to evoke an emotional reaction. My focus was on the very being of the material, as well as its immense photographic potential. Fascination with the transparency and reflection, as well as the challenge of photographing it, led me to research on glass and its representation within history of photography. With the series I’m studying the magic of light in photography and using it a tool to give life to lifeless glass.
For the epilogue, Anna Kieblesz (scanned glass composition), Aleksi Marjamaa (glass installation) & Ivan Čuić (glass soundscape) were invited to contribute to Glass Cycle with works which would enrich the initial dialogue and further emphasize the versatility of the material.
